Landlords set to take advantage of Green Deal

A recent panel consultation has been carried out by the National Landlords Association which has shown that the majority of landlords are keen to take the opportunity to carry out energy efficiency measures that will be available from October. A significant 63% of the landlords’ panel were aware of the implications of the Green Deal and 56% have indicated they are seriously considering taking advantage of the provisions of the new energy initiative.

In particular for landlords, the Green Deal provides the following:

1. Any rental properties which have an Energy Performance Rating of F or G after 2018 will not be fit for rental purposes. It is anticipated that this will make rental properties more energy efficient.

2. Consumers will be given loans to carry out energy efficiency measures such as loft and wall insulation which will then be repaid through the savings on their energy bills.

Chairman of the NLA, David Salusbury said:

“Whilst our research shows that many landlords are keen to take advantage of the Green Deal, a third of landlords are not yet aware of the initiative. We encourage landlords to become familiar with the Green Deal as the private-rented sector has a key role to play in ensuring Britain meets its energy targets.” “Furthermore, it is imperative that landlords future-proof their properties and their investments. The Green Deal is their opportunity to improve the quality of their properties and demonstrate their ability to engage with government initiatives without the burden of further regulation. If landlords don’t act now, they may find their property cannot be legally let come 2018.”
