Jersey energy plan aims for 80% cut in carbon emissions

Jersey’s new draft energy plan describes their aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. The Department for the Environment has suggested a long-term plan which would involve the use of alternative energy resources to include wind and tidal energy.

Rob Duhamel, Minister Deputy has called for a change to be made immediately if the wellbeing of future generations is to be secured. The general public have been asked to give feedback on the plan by the end of January.

Previous research carried out in Jersey has found that one-third of their emissions are sourced from cars and other transportation methods, one-third from domestic heating and power and the remainder is used for running essential services and commercial uses.

The Director of Environmental Policy, Dr Louise Magris described that the plan sets out 30 actions to be taken to reduce energy consumption. It intends to extend on the Energy Efficiency Service which insulated over 1,300 homes and focus on improving the future security of Jersey’s energy.
